We usually seek counselling when we are trying to bring about change in our lives that feels too challenging to achieve alone. If this sounds familiar it may be that you've had some counselling before and already know what can be achieved by attending sessions. It's also possible that this is the first time you have thought about seeking professional support and you may be wondering what to expect or what questions to ask? Sometimes, the prospect of coming for counselling can feel a little daunting - especially when making that first call to book an appointment. This is all perfectly understandable so if you are feeling at all concerned it may help to if I say something about myself and the services I can offer you.
I began to think about training as a counsellor more than 12 years ago when my own difficulties with work-related stress brought me into contact with the world of therapy. For many years my previous career had been in management and it's not uncommon for people who have had their own life-changing experiences to make the decision to train as a counsellor. This was certainly the path that I took. Since that time, I feel that I have continued to benefit from my training as a counsellor and from attending therapy. Because of this, I am passionate about my work and have continued to gain specialist skills that I have been able to use to help many people across a range of commonly experienced problems including relationships, addictions and anxiety and depression.
Choosing the counsellor that's right for you
One of the most important things that I have learnt from being in therapy myself is just how important it is to feel comfortable and at ease with the counsellor that you choose and for this reason I try to offer my clients the same kind of approach that I would look for in a therapist. Being sincere, warm, and respectful to clients' needs are essential qualities for anyone providing therapy and I believe that we can all be much more confident about achieving change when we feel genuinely heard and understood .
